Chairing Not-for-Profit Boards in an Era of Public Scrutiny: Protecting Reputation, Resources, and Relevance

Enhance your ability to lead not-for-profit boards with authority in environments shaped by limited resources, heightened regulatory oversight, and increasing public scrutiny.

Chairs of not-for-profit boards are responsible for ensuring compliance with ONCA, CNCA, and CRA obligations while guiding volunteer directors, managing stakeholder influence, and supporting executives under considerable strain. The risks are significant: reputational damage, funding loss, and regulatory non-compliance.

In this highly focused session, you will engage with your peers to examine case studies involving donor conditions, governance missteps, and executive fatigue. Through structured discussion, you will strengthen your ability to uphold fiduciary responsibilities and safeguard mission integrity by:

  • Applying ONCA, CNCA, and CRA requirements directly to your role as chair.
  • Evaluating strategies for protecting organizational reputation and donor confidence.
  • Clarifying boundaries in supporting and evaluating an executive director under pressure.

Who Should Participate?

These peer-to-peer sessions are for those who have completed the ICD Chairing Boards course. It has been tailored for current or near-term board chairs of for-profit, large not-for-profit, and Crown organizations beginning their term in the next six to twelve months.
